Pregnancy- Vegetarian prenatal vitamins and EPA

Mar 11, 2008 16:20

I recently found out I am pregnant. I have been vegan for about ten years so I am pretty good at eating healthy so I am not really concerned about that. I think the most stressful part of this is doing it without the dad since he is so not interested in taking care of a child.

Anyway, I had my first ultrasound today and my doctor is going to give me some prenatal vitamins on my next visit. I have been reading all of the information he gave me. Included is information about prenatal vitamins. All of the info says that I need both DHA and EPA and that EPA is only available in non-vegetarian prenatal vitamins that contain fish oil. The information stresses the importance of this and says to make sure to take the non-vegetarian prenatal vitamins to keep your child from having asthma, allergies and other problems.

I only met the doctor today but he was 100% positive about me being vegan and pregnant but we did not talk about the vegetarian vitamins since we're dealing with that next time. I will bring it up but I would like more information from people who have gone through this. I know some of you have children so someone hopefully has encountered this situation and can give me advice before I go back to talk to the doctor.

Will everything be okay if I don't take the vitamin with the DHA and EPA? If not, are there any alternatives?

Also, I would **love** to talk to other vegan mommies. I really don't know anyone with kids, much less anyone who has been vegan and pregnant. With the dad not around and not having anyone around who has been through this I am feeling quite alone.
