The waste is offensive, not to mention that an estimated 1 out of every 2 animals shot is left maimed or injured.

good point and article. thank you.
seriously, living out on dirt roads, I hate passing the same carcass everyday, watching it decompose. And in the summer time?

i'm glad you asked this. living in the midwest obv. hunting season is a big deal. i have noticed though that with people who hunt and enjoy it as a "sport", you arent going to get anywhere with them no matter what facts or arguements you have.

i could never understand hunting, ever. obviously i could never harm an animal but the whole mounting of animal heads on your living room wall is disgusting.

I pretty much avoid having to talk to anybody that hunts so I guess I'm not a lot of help, but I live in MI too and I feel your pain.

A lot of people argue that it is for population control. But doesn't mother nature take care of that like it has for billions of years?sadly, no. populations of what would ordinarily be prey animals are skyrocketing because of human interference. we're terrified of predators (yet another reason it's stupid when people say that humans are at the top of the food chain) and take pains to destroy them wherever possible. the result is that the species that predators are meant to keep in check run wild and breed exponentially. so it's not incorrect to say that population control is an issue. a few friends of mine live in an area that has such an overpopulation of deer that it's not a question of if you'll hit a deer and total your car - it's how long it will take you to do it ( ... )

a human hunter, on the other hand, tends to go for the impressive kill so he can brag to his friends, and so he takes down the best specimens he can find, weakening the species as a whole.

That makes me sad. I just posted that that kind of thing was such a big taboo, while I was growing up. When someone would brag about getting "that great 10-pointer" the other hunters would talk about it really derisively and allude to the bragger's evidently small penis size over it.

I don't like hunting, but I'm not necessarily against it. I've also never met trophy hunters, so it's never seemed needlessly cruel to me, although I know it exists. I think it's unrealistic to expect every family out there to be vegan, and I'd rather they eat hunted meat for 3-4 months out of the year than buy it from a grocery store. It's also far healthier than hormone-pumped beef ( ... )

I feel about the same as you, as most of the hunters I've known eat what they kill and preserve the meat for the winter. They're also proficient with guns so they kill more humanely than the morons that come up once a year from the city. With the exceptions of trophy hunting and Dick Cheney-style canned hunting, I consider it a lesser evil than the factory farming system, reasoning that until they get killed, the animals are living the most natural and free life they can hope to enjoy in this f**ked up day and age.

I agree that to feed families that need it. 100% I hope you don't feel offended by this post, as such circumstances are completely understandable. It is how mankind survived.

Stocking the hunted meat in the freezer also diminishes the "demand" from buying at the grocery store.

I do, however, get very upset with these hunters around here who don't hunt for food, but just for the "sport" and waste the animal.

Thanks for your comment. I don't feel offended by this post - I do feel offended by some of the comments, though. It's like there's this assumption that all hunters are cold-hearted murderers with no respect for life. I sometimes feel like I'm a bit of a dissenting voice on this board. Until a few months ago, I had no idea Cheney-style "canned" hunting even existed (I probably learned that from a post here, in fact), and of course that's just sick and wasteful to me ( ... )
