someone recently posted a video of Dr. Barnard discussing the benefits of veganism, and his story about his mom was really inspirational. (for those who don't know, his mom turned vegan after she discovered she had heart disease

I have tomes and tomes of articles about the benefits of a plant based diet, mostly from peer reviewed professional scientific and medical journals, but I need space to store them online. When I can find a place, I want to upload the PDF.
The most interesting one I found recently is why "normal" cholesterol is not optimal and why lower is better. The study is a sort of meta analysis of dozens of cholesterol studies which aim to lower cholesterol on Heart disease patients.
The authors compared the average LDL levels of all the studies after treatment with statin drugs and compared the number of cardiac events after treatment. There is is striking correlation between the number of cardiac events and the average LDL levels even though the levels are "normal"
Based on the data, the authors extrapolated that cardiac events cease around LDL levels of around 50-70mg/dl which is much lower than what is considered "normal"
The authors also compared the LDL levels of neonates, modern hunter & gatherers, primates and mammals and none of them have LDL levels over 80 and consequently none develop heart disease.
This paper is very important in that it suggests heart disease is a disease of civilization and questions the "omnivore" status of humans, particularly when you combine this information with the studies that demonstrate herbivores get heart disease from an increase in cholesterol in their diets (like rabbits) but true omnivores and carnivores do not.
Anyway, here's some links to some articles on the Now Foods website, taken from various journals, which were written by Doctors. I can track the original documents down and send you PDF's if you send me your email. I will also send you a slew of articles already on my HD. They are meant for researchers, but you can get an idea of what they conclude in the abstract.
