hello everybody,
I've been vegan for about 2 years now, and vegetarian for 4 more. I've always incorporated a large amount of soy, legumes, broccoli and other gassy foods into my diet, but lately, i've been having a lot of trouble.
For about 3 weeks now, every time i have a meal with any of the aforementioned foods, my stomach goes crazy. I get debilitating cramps for the rest of the evening, and usually am forced to sleep it off.
I recently acquired a vegan form of beano that is supposed to help me digest these foods. For the most part, it works. But if I have something like tempeh, forget about it.
The aching is always in my stomach, not my abdomen. And that is usually the only symptom - really bad cramps. Often, they don't start until about an hour after my meal. And it's usually my last meal of the day that provokes it. And what's even worse is that the pain comes in waves. So I might start to feel perfectly fine and then they'll pop out of nowhere just as fast.
I don't want to go to a doctor, because I'm sure they'll just ask me to start taking prevacid or some other prescription drug, which i don't want to do.
Could this problem of mine be caused by anything other than the food? Do I need to drastically cut soy out of my diet? I've already switched over to rice milk.
Let me know if you guys have any suggestions. I don't want to have to take bean-zyme before every meal for the rest of my life! ;)
Thanks so much.
