*Finding* Fur

I got into a somewhat heated discussion in a LiveJournal community recently regarding a press photograph of a certain musician I am fond of. The musician (Joanna Newsom, if ya must know) was wearing an appalling headdress made of coyote skin, and my remarks provoked an argument with a handful of people. I was shot down, primarily because they seem to believe that there is a possibility the coyote's carcass was "found."
What is the likelihood of this, if any? Are there any known fashion designers that work with animals which were found dead? How long would it take an animal to decay beyond the point of use?
