I recently bought some frozen natto (Japanese fermented soy beans) from a local market on a tip they were super healthy and vegan.  But I guess they're a bit too much of a shock to my western palate ( Read more... )

I've seen it rolled in sushi.

I'll eat some funky stuff. I've made sauerkraut, and always keep a jar of kimchee at work....but natto is simply too gross for me. It's not the flavor so much as the gooey, stringy alien tentacles.

Hey, OP: You could try it wrapped in some toasted nori. I know people who like it and that's how they eat it at home.

One of my cousins loves natto. His mom would make him go out in the garage to eat it. She hated the smell and couldn't bear to watch him eat it.

It is certainly a special kind of taste. It doesn't bother me at all, but I lived in Tokyo and ate all sorts of things unknown to my Western tongue. You might want to make sushi rolls with something else you like more. Mushrooms maybe. I bet it would go well with mushrooms. And lots of something spicy.
