Soy free protein in a stir fry?

Feb 28, 2006 20:25

Stir frys are so healthful and they are something my husband an I really enjoy. However I am slightly sensitive to soy and my husband doesn't care for tofu or bean curd. It seems like I can get away with using a small amount of Bragg's (like soy sauce), but I don't want to include any additional soy product. I added mung bean sprouts thinking ( Read more... )

Seitan! For the meat, that is.

Oh, and sometimes I add peanuts to a stir-fry instead of tofu. A nice peanut sauce is an alternate too.

Peanuts and peanut sauce are great ideas. Seitan's out though due to wheat sensitivity. Thanks for the suggestion.

whole almonds, chickpeas, cooked black beans, sesame seeds?

to replace soy sauce or braggs, try blending a bit of miso paste (you can get soy-free miso) with a bit of water and tossing it in at the last moment (you don't want to cook it overly much or you destroy it's beneficial enzymes). it have a pleasant salty flavour.

I'll try these things in a stir fry. I never saw them used in a Chinese restaraunt so it never occurred to me that I could.

I'll look to see if the co-op carries soy-free miso as that would be a great alternative to Bragg's should I need one.

yeah, it's nice to be able to come here and get ideas that are a little "outside the box", innit? i LOVE whole almonds in stirfry, they get kind of chewy and their slight sweetness is a wonderful compliment to the saltiness of the sauces you use.

good luck!

Miso in place of some of the soy sauce, chickpeas as the protein. Chick peas are AWESOME in stirfries.. better than tofu even.
You can also use a little veggie broth to add more flavour, along with lots of garlic and ginger.
There are also stirfry sauces that are soy free... one black bean garlic one I get soemtimes is very good.

I'll check out stir fry sauces at the co-op to see if I can find a soy free variety. I'll have to check out the chickpeas thing too. I like them but it would have never occurred to me to try them in stir fry. Thanks.

Seitan contains wheat. Unfortunately I am sensitive to wheat as well.

Sesame oil is a great idea. I have some. Wonder why I never thought of it? I'll pick up sesame seeds too. Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have tried five spice powder and wasn't particularly fond of it but I'll have to try some of the other things you mention. I forgot about rice vinegar and that goes great in stir fry.

I've never liked the mixes they sell in stores. Try it with the cumin and coriander, which is a deviation from the standard recipe and might be more enjoyable, in conjunction with the vinegar.
