alternative thinkings on soy

Oct 07, 2006 14:11

hello everyone! i have read in a book or two, been informed on various occasions from different sources, that soy products are bad for you. some sources say not all soy products are bad, just ones that are not fermented. many sources have said things that i have already read about in other sources in previous research. anyways, i've always avoided ( Read more... )

totally look into it. i read up on the phytoestrogens of soy foods, which are the plant estrogens that react with human estrogens, which is esp. dangerous for women given that our bodies are comprised mainly of estrogen and not testosterone.

i have read that soy products cause breast cancer, reproductive problems in women from endometriosis to sterility, theyroid problems... a wide range!

Yes, the soy "controversy" continues to wage on. I am not entirely sure who is behind this web site, an important point when researching the gobs of information on the internet.

As with most things, the key is moderation. In Chinese medicine, soy is an important part of a balanced diet however anything in excess will have its ramifications. Soy is particularly good for women as they age as it helps to replace and balance hormones that are on the decline. Personally, I avoid soy products that are overly processed such as isolated soy protein, TVP, and the like.

May I ask, how did you make the connection between your soy consumption and your menstrual cycle? Was there other things going on in your life? In your experience, how much soy milk did you consume when you were drinking "too much"?

Just curious here.... I find the soy issue rather challenging.

i am not sure who is behind the soy website, but in reading it i don't find them to be promoting anything, so i don't think that it is to benefit anyone, just simply to inform about the dangers of soy ( ... )

Please, I must say that I had no intention of minimizing your opinion nor did I mean for you to take offense to my musings and questions. I do not think you are stupid. Not at all. If I did, I never would have responded to your post ( ... )

4L a week, and yeah, that's a lot.

and i wasn't implying that you think i'm stupid, but it was in another forum i x-posted this to that people don't seem to be taking me seriously.

the thing is, in china they don't have soy milk, they have soy juice, and they make it fresh with soybeans. this is unlike anything in north america... but now china's supply of soybeans mainly comes from the US genetically engineered crops, which is quite dangerous.

thanks @ kudos. :o) i wish others would be so inclined to look into that themselves, instead i am being insulted by them for not being a doctor. as if you need to be a doctor to know what's going on with your body... that's just another way of how pathetic our world is and how brainwashed some people are that medicine is like the ultimate and that anyone below it couldn't possibly know enough about their own health... blah blah..

anyway, soy sucks, and i'm glad that you agree that it is definitely a marketing scheme. check out that website, for real.

that's up to you to decide in doing research. many people seem to think i'm stupid because i would bring up such a topic. i don't know if it's in this community or others because i am answering these comments from my email, but just because soy is organic it doesn't take away what the problems are--the phytoestrogens, phytic acid, etc.--the toxins that fill soy products. although if you choose to use soy, organic would be best since there is no use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers, but i am a huge advocate for organic food and i am really into health and my research has been telling me that soy should not be consumed.

Honestly, if it wasn't for soy products and tofu, the list of foods I eat would be shortened dramatically. I've heard about the possibility of soy causing problems before, but it is largely just speculation. I haven't seen much in the way of reliable facts about the harmful effects of soy.

umm, maybe you need to look into better diet? i find a lot of veg*ns seem to think they need to replace animal products with soy equivalents, which seems to be what you're doing. look into the health benefits of other foods like legumes and vegetables and don't depend so much on soy.

that website is some information which to me seems reliable about the harmful effects of soy. if you look online you could also find stories by other women.

it's up to you, though, i simply am giving the infromation for open-minded health conscious people to look into. i needed someone to tell me so i'm telling you, it's your decision of whetehr you want to look into it or not.

No, it's not what I'm doing at all actually. My point was it gives me more variety in my diet, not that all I'm eating is soysoytofusoy. Moderation is key, and I enjoy using tofu in my stir frys and soy milk in my oatmeal cookies.

The main problem with soy, according to that website, seems to be estrogen. However, many plants that are part of our everyday diet produce high levels of phytoestrogens. Also, personal stories don't do much to convince me since there isn't any real basis of fact to back it up.

In any case, I know I'm much better off with my soy products than with dairy.

the estrogens are an important factor as well as the phytic acid.

well, that's a shame that personal stories don't affect you.

and what is up with people who feel that they need to replace dairy with soy? you don't! you don't need a "milk", or a "cheese" or a "burger" or anything that is soy-based and not animal.

it seems that the animal industry still seems to control veg*ns.

soy is the devil with my body! it causes a loooot of pain, esp soy milk. i think we need to think of how possibly harmful it is.

and people totally think i'm trying to bullshit them!

soy sucks! i think so, you think so, friends of mine who have health problems, online testimonials that are NOT promoting ANYTHING say so...... the list goes on!

some people would just rather remain ignorant.

Er, it's certainly not a matter of remaining ignorant. You seem to be very intolerant to anyone who isn't agreeing with you, yet I haven't seen a single person say, "oh you're wrong, soy is the perfect food." The general consensus seems to be that yes, soy might cause problems. But, due to lack of reliable research and that soy is probably only harmful in large amounts, it isn't worth giving up forever.

And honestly, pretty much every food product out there is going to cause some people troubles.

true.

anyway, i just wanted to share the info because i think it's beneficial for those who choose to explore it. i did, but i am sometimes placed on the extreme side of things when it comes to health.
