Author's note: This was written for sq_drabblers and the prompt was experiment. I hope I have spelled the name of the store correctly. The Lexicon was down when I tried to go to check.
Tom Riddle had learned a lot from his day at Diagon Alley and he was pleased. He reckoned he understood how wizards thought but to be sure he decided to try a small experiment. He tested his theories in Flourish and Blots on the wizard he knew to be the owner, the most important person in the store.
“Ready for Hogwarts?” the wizard asked him as he laid his books out on the counter.
“I don’t know how I’ll do. I’m a little scared. They’ll probably put me in Hufflepuff.” Tom’s face was a mask of shy fearful nervousness. He’d already made sure that everyone in the place knew he was an orphan, alone in the world, managing on his own to get what he needed for school.
“Oh don’t worry - You’ll do better than that. You’re a sharp fellow. I’ve already seen that just watching you today. You’re no Hufflepuff. You’ll go far. You’ll see. They’ll see it at the school too.” The wizard smiled at Tom as he spoke trying to give the poor orphan some encouragement and hope that he’d do better than Hufflepuff house.
Tom considered the experiment a success. At the orphanage they harped on honesty, loyalty, and hard-work claiming that they admired such things. Last Christmas the vicar had come and had talked about the meek inheriting the earth, but it was all a sham. Wizards were more honest. They made Hufflepuff house for the weak and useless who clung to being good because that was all they had, while everyone else knew what was what and used either their brains, birth, bravery or cleverness to get ahead. Wizards respected power and no one bothered to pretend otherwise. Tom Riddle liked the wizarding world. He knew he would do well there.
