Sabriel from the book by the same name -- She calmly accepts the very difficult responsibilities that she inherited from her father and faces with skill and aplomb all she encounters as Abhorsen. She does her duty in the face of danger, without faltering or complaining. I loved the book and I loved her.
Snape -- I can's say I love, admire or even like Snape. I thought he was as infantile and self absorbed as he was brave, but the man more than carried his weight in the Harry Potter books. Few characters in any book excited more interest and was followed with more intensity.
Santiago from the Old Man and The Sea -- The man was reflective, fanciful, and cheerful in difficulties. Before the giant fish, the sharks and the ocean itself he was indefatigable and courageous yet humble and respectful. He loved baseball, Joe DiMaggio, and the Yankees, how could I not love him?
Long John Silver from Treasure Island - For sheer fun he is the best character I've ever read. Cunning, brave and ruthless, he rules the other pirates by force of will and intelligence. The man can stare down a mutiny, but he can humble himself and suck up as the need requires. Like the perfect eighteenth century middle-class worker, he's intelligent, hardworking and thrifty, -- too bad he's evil.
Spiderman from the movies - I love an unassuming and modest superhero, especially one who still struggles in his ordinary life, needing to support himself at bad jobs, while hoping the lovely girl will notice him.
