Well, I'm thinking again of going to culinary school. It was one of my top choices back in my high school "what the fuck am I going to do with my life?" period. It was eventually beaten out by theater, which went nowhere. But I've been watching a lot of those cooking reality programs where the chef guy screams at people who aren't cooking well enough, and, well, it's made me want to cook again. The fact that all that craziness looks FUN says a lot about my chances in that kind of environment.
Also, I'm working as a manager in the kitchen department at McDonald's. Watching these shows have made me see how much I already know about running a kitchen. I can do that. All I need are the techniques and no-how about fancier cooking, which school will hopefully teach me.
My friend Heather's been visiting for a while, and today we had a serious cooking session. We made a cake from scratch (she did most of the work with the batter, but I had lots of ideas for seasoning additives!), and I made up a fairly simple enchilada casserole. Everything was delicious, and I had so much fun.
This is our cake. It's a yellow cake base with vanilla, almond extract, cinnamon, and a bit of crushed almonds mixed in. The icing is buttercream with a touch of chocolate hazelnut spread, with powdered sugar, almonds, and cinnamon on top. It was so amazing!
And here's my casserole. Very tasty! Rice with chicken, onions, yellow and orange peppers, a tiny bit of chile for flavor, garlic, cilantro, fresh ground pepper (white, green, and black), a touch of fresh ground cinnamon, with enchilada sauce (canned, but still tasty), tortilla chips, and cheese on top.
