Okay, the REASON I live in a cold climate is that we have SMALL BUGS. And some cicadas, but you hardly ever see them despite how loud they are, yes I know they are basically the size of compact cars, but they're slow and stupid so they don't count. I say, the REASON I live in a cold climate is not to have giant bugs.

There is a giant bug in my house. I think it is a katydid, which the internet reports is harmless. Also, it is in grave danger of being predated upon by an ardently fascinated but deeply incompetent cat. BUT IT CAN FLY. IN MY KITCHEN. OR POTENTIALLY ELSEWHERE IN MY HOUSE.

I am not going to get out a blowtorch and burn down my house to get rid of it, but only barely. (I tried whacking it with a broom, and only made it fly to places I can't reach.)

GIANT BUG IN MY HOUSE.

(Probably if it could not fly I would not have as much of a problem. I have seen and admired several praying mantises in my day! But large flying bugs appear to fall into the same category as bats. I will handle all the field mice you need me to handle, as long as I don't have to deal with flying critters in my house.)

AUGH.

ETA: All hail Nitty the Katydid Slayer! Or, Nitty the Katydid disabler, i.e. she knocked it down to the floor and called for me to come inspect her work, whereupon I was able to sweep it up into a dustpan and deposit said dustpan in the back stairwell. Will the creature scare the pants off my neighbor now? I don't care!

Nitty was very disappointed that her live toy had to go away. But I was not going to risk it regaining the ability to fly while in my house.

I have moved mostly over to Dreamwidth. Please comment there if you can.
