In the last few years I've begun taking videos of my travels, adventures, and misadventures, and I only see that interest growing. It'll never replace my photography, since they're for two very different things (art versus journal), but they would definitely compliment one another.
This is where I realize I'm a noob at videography.
A couple of things that I need: 1) Quality sound during recordings; 2) Post production editing capabilities. #2 should be pretty simple- what's the most popular video editing package on the market? After a very brief look, I'm considering something like Adobe Premiere Elements 7. The full-blown Premiere may be a little too much for me and what I'm doing (but maybe not... I don't know). I would love to have your recommendations here.
#1, capturing quality sound, is proving to be a bit more challenging than I'd like. Most of my recordings I do with my point-and-shoot camera, which is awesome for the way I'm using it, and really don't see myself going with anything else for standard video blogging. However, the microphone is crap. The lack of windscreen makes capturing any sounds impossible in anything over a calm breeze. Consequently, I need a separate solid-state recording device for sound, and maybe a quality lavalier mic (something small and unobtrusive. It will also need to have a quality timing system; I don't want the audio getting out of sync (yes, I know I'll need to 'clapperboard' it at the beginning).
At first, I was looking at the
Zoom H4n, but it might be overkill. I don't think I would ever use four tracks, or even the built-in mic. I need the sound recording system to be just as small and simple as the video recording (i.e., my Canon SD-series pocket camera).
Instead, maybe something like the
Yamaha Pocketrak 2G,
Tascam DR07, or
Olympus LS10. However, these only support a 3.5mm input, and I think all of the good lavalier mics use XLRM. I don't know pro audio that well, so maybe someone can weigh-in on what may be a good option for what I'm trying to do.
So, in a nutshell, I need input on:
1) Portable sound recording
2) Microphones
3) Video editing software
Thanks!
Edit: BRAIN FART! I could mount a pocket recorder that has an integrated mic like the LS10 to the base of the camera and therefore not need the lavalier or fancy shmancy inputs. Sound would be quite as good, but still far better than what I've got now. Hrm...
