American 785 (MD-80)
Seat 18F
Unknown small-sized aircraft (on the order of size as a private jet, such as a Cessna Citation) appeared to pass within 100 feet of American 785 on port side at a slightly lower altitude.
The unknown aircraft's strobe captured my attention as it was approaching, but was only within my field of vision for approximately three seconds due to speed and proximity. During it's passing I could clearly see the lights on its wingtips, approximating the unknown aircrafts size. My field of view is approximately 90 degrees, so my observations could be validated mathematically.
The passenger in 17F immediately noticed the unknown aircraft as well and commented "Oh my God! Did you see that?! Did you see how close we were?!"
"Yes. That's insane. What did that look like to you? One-hundred feet?"
"That's scary," she replied.
"You ever see Fight Club?" I ask.
It's not so much that I have a morbid sense of humor. It really just comes off that way. Really, I'm just accepting that the majority of life's events are out of my control, and as such, I try not to let them bother me.
In all fairness, it was dark outside, so I couldn't see the aircraft that well. It could have been something larger, like a 737 that was several hundred feet away (typical airspace distance is no less than 1000 feet). Regardless, it was close. Really close.
