God, I'm glad I use Linux

SURF is coming to an end tomorrow...but I think I'm going to keep working; I like the project, and I want to publish a paper.  But I will have more time to goof off in any case.

I made two impulse purchases yesterday; the D&D Players' Handbook (Nikhil should be happy with that, less passing around of the book) and the new Coldplay CD.  I have to agree with what I've read about it; I really nice the instrument usage in the songs, but some of the lyrics are a little off.  Then again, I'll listen to almost anything, and I like Coldplay, despite the fact that the band is in some ways looked down upon by our resident music snobs. ;-)

Things like this make me so glad I don't use Windows any more (except for gaming, of course):

Has anyone who reads this ever had to deal with the GAIN/GATOR/CLARIA lines of spyware?  I remember back in the day, my friend Vivek and I had to clean his computer of spyware; it took 7 hours to kill all the damn Claria crap.  (This was before ad-aware was awesome; it couldn't clean a lot of things back then.)  It kept copying itself to a new place on the hard drive when we tried to delete it; smart little bastard.  The "uninstaller" made you go to Claria's website, where they tried to infect your computer with even more spyware from them, and hid the correct uninstallation instructions through double-negatives and cryptic language.  If Windows Antispyware doesn't consider this crap spyware/adware,  then it will be the most worthless product ever.

And why on earth does Microsoft want to BUY a spyware company?  So windows can get even slower on infected PCs?  "Guys, guys...we can integrate spyware with the core of the OS now!"

On a happier note, looking forward to heading back to the dorms.  But it does mean saying goodbye to some people.  Who knows if it'll be the same as last year; being on the same floor really helps, and we're offset by 2 floors from everyone else.  But it'll be nicer than being at home; I like setting my own schedule.  My classes start way too early though.
