There's a lot to be said for being a shameless opportunist. The architects in the building next door are moving to their new location, and today they put a bunch of stuff at the curb, including (trumpet fanfare!) a length of countertop! It's slightly off white, in perfectly good condition, and more than long enough for the proposed space--it can always be pruned as needed.
I'm absolutely thrilled. (It doesn't take much to make me happy.) That just knocked a minimum of $50 off my kitchen face-lift. I'll still need an end cap and side splash panel, but that was under $20 the last time I looked. *does Snoopy dance* I WILL have the kitchen of my dreams, I will, I will!
This was a prime example of the silver lining inside the cloud, because the weather has been freaking cold, so instead of sitting on the church steps to write as I prefer to do, I went out back to my car and sat there instead. Nice and warm.... I saw the countertop as a couple of guys were taking stuff out through the back door and asked what they were going to do with it.
When they said it was up for grabs--I grabbed! Dragged it around the corner and propped it against the side of the building where it was more or less obscured from casual passersby by the sea grape bush. Called B and begged her to help me get it home (There was no @#$%ing way it was going to fit into the Honda.) and bless her, she showed up at 5pm and drove it home for me.
It's living in my garage for the time being, and I'm gleeful at the acquisition of a key piece of my remodeling strategy. I *must* get a decent refrigerator. The living room has improved to the point where I can actually get one into the house...now, all I have to do is find an affordable one and oh, yeah--get the piece of sh*t heater out and an outlet installed in the new fridge's location. After today's euphoria, it actually feels do-able!
