I love many things about my humble apartment. One thing I will not miss about the lifestyle I'm leaving behind is laundry. I hate carting it up and down stairs, sometimes not being able to do it when I want to, having to hoard loonies and quarters, the poor reliability of the machines, and especially the way they chew my clothes. I ran the Dwight route for the annual international Breeding Bird Survey for the 11th time on Saturday morning. I had a couple of treats this time.

The route begins at the same time every year, 4:54 a.m. or a half-hour before sunrise, and runs through mixed forest of the Haliburton Highlands. Along 40 km of road I make the same 50 stops every year ( Read more... )

The Breeding Bird Survey was exciting this year. For one thing, I got a life bird.

The weather was unusual. Rain was falling when I got out of bed at 3:55 a.m. If it had kept up I would have had to postpone the run until this morning, cancelling other plans. Birds don't mind a little wet, but we're not allowed to conduct the survey in steady rain. ( Read more... )
