It has been a perfect weekend. The deck overlooks a pine forest and gets a cooling breeze in the afternoon. It is the perfect place for margaritas or sangrias.
Friday Laura came over and we had a picnic lunch, then went to Dundas.
Lorraine Roy and her husband had an open studio. She was happy to see us and asked how things were going. I told her Danny is moving and we had just picked up the keys for our new home. I fell for one of her small art quilts with tree shapes silhouetted against a deep blue and burnt orange background. Then I found the title-Tobermory Sunset-and said, "No wonder I was attracted to it." She told us it was half price. Now it is on our bedroom wall, where soft evening light floods through the curtains.
After Lorraine's studio, we took Laura to nearby Webster Falls and Tews Falls, which none of us had ever seen before. Flat Southwestern Ontario is not known for its waterfalls, but these were lovely.
On Saturday our new bed arrived, then Danny and I watched Julie and Julia, lots of fun. Late in the afternoon Lori came over, but it was too hot and humid to sit outside. I threw steaks on the barbecue, then we sat inside watching Topsy Turvy, a long and strange movie about the first staging of The Mikado.
A violent storm came but we didn't realize until it was upon us because it approached from the north and the house is hermetically sealed. Then we heard some muffled thumps and looked outside to see wind and rain tearing the trees and swirling down the street, and a wall cloud passing overhead. Our windows have a great view of the southwestern sky so we got to watch the rest of the movie with lighting flashing in the corners of our eyes.
The storm cleared the air. This morning I came onto the deck and wrote here first thing. Danny and I spent good chunks of the day out here. We won't have internet at the house until next Saturday, but for now we're able to pick up an unsecured network from the deck. We spent most of the afternoon out here playing Cities and Knights of Catan. The west side neighbours played with their small children in the backyard all afternoon, a kind of noise we can put up with. I could get very happily used to this.
Just now the east side neighbour came and talked to us from his back deck. He said this is the best part of Guelph he has lived in-it's so quiet. His name is Greg.
