I pestered Kyle into answering an ad on Gumtree (similar to Craigslist) from a Japanese guy who is studying English here in Cambridge who wanted practice with English conversation and who was willing to help someone with their Japanese. I went along when they met at a coffee shop, because Kyle is so not keen on meeting new people

Some japanese can be a little afraid of that kind of thing. I don't think most swedes would run away from you if they see that you can speak their language ;)
I have some friends who live in Japan, or speaking a really decent japanese, and sometimes they have meet japanese who were afraid by that (some people have really run away from them). Even when I was there, with a poor level in the language, I've made some people uncomfortable when they have realized I was able to understand what they were saying sometimes.
