I pestered Kyle into answering an ad on Gumtree (similar to Craigslist) from a Japanese guy who is studying English here in Cambridge who wanted practice with English conversation and who was willing to help someone with their Japanese. I went along when they met at a coffee shop, because Kyle is so not keen on meeting new people.
While we were there, I received a call from a Bolivian friend, who ended up stopping at the coffee shop for a few minutes. To my amazement, he started chatting with the Japanese guy in competent Japanese. I suppose this is similar to the reaction when Swedes find out I can speak their language, only more so.
