Once a soldier...

Someone once said, "It's not how you do a job, but how well you do it." I don't remember who exactly said that to me...maybe it was my father, maybe one of my COs once, or I might have read it in a book once. Regardless, it's sound advice.

Some of the men have been complainingvoicing some concern over our recent course of action. They feel we should be moving faster, that we should lay siege to this town and damn the Slayer. That we've proven how ineffective she is when faced with superior force and superior intellect.

Point taken, and appreciated.

However, what I've tried to explain to the men -- most of whom were never soldiers before now -- is that patience is required when planning an operation such as this. That no matter how much we feel we are destined for something, that destiny will only be achieved when it's ready to be achieved.

Of course, the last time I spoke to one of my men about this, I said I sounded too much like that Mr. Miyagi, we shared a laugh, and then I lopped off his head with my knife.

I won't stand for subordination in my outfit.

But that doesn't take away the fact that I'm right.

What we've been doing has had purpose. We can rest easy in the knowledge that our victory is inevitable, yet we cannot take the chance that our victory may be delayed. Especially by some...female...and her band of civilians.

The men have been taking who they need from the streets. Taking into account both the rate of capture, as well as the rate of consumption -- my boys have to eat, after all -- we should reach our goal within a few weeks.

But perhaps it's time to take steps to assure that we won't be bothered.

I've had some of the men taking surveillance of Riley Finn the past few nights. They've been noting his patterns. Who he sees, when he sees them...and when he's alone.

Finn and I usually got along in the Initiative. We'd play chess occasionally. I never lost, but a couple of times he came close. While I would've never called him a friend, per se, I know he's a good soldier.

Perhaps it's time to pay him a visit. One on one, man to man.

Perhaps it's time to recruit him to our cause...
