Scratch is the closest thing to a father Kanaya has ever had. Although the circumstances which led to their first meeting were mostly random, his initial motivation to befriend her was anything but: just a few days before that first meeting, Scratch had had a vision in which he saw himself being saved by a mysterious girl, years into the future... and that girl was Kanaya Maryam. (More info on how their relationship progressed can be found in Scratch's AU Background.)
Presently, Scratch is one of the most important people in Kanaya's life. He is her Tată-- the Romanian word for Father, which she always uses in an affectionate manner-- and someone she loves and trusts unconditionally.
