busy, busy, busy....

I have been soooo busy these past two months. nursing is so time consuming. in fact, in the next 6 weeks, i have a test every single monday, not to mention clincals every tuesday and wednesday. its not that is hard or anything, i mean, i got 2 B's on my last tests. it just that i am studying sooo much everyday. at least its interesting material. i love nursing. i couldn't see myself doing anything else. this week i had an operating room rotation. i was able to see an open heart surgery and 2 lap-gastric bypasses. very cool. i really thought that i would get weak and pass out, but i didn't. i enjoyed it so much. but i have to say that i am very surprised with how little the RN does in the OR. i really thought that they were up there with the patient helping the surgeon, but they never really touch the patient, except the prep work. all they really do is "circulate" which means that they open sterile packages when needed and keep supplies on the table. not my idea of a nurse. in fact, the people who touch the patient and work with the doctor only go to school for like a year or two i think. they are called scrub techs. i saw them do stiches and one of them was actually holding a place on the heart for the doctor. so, as for being an OR nurse, i think that its not for me. i want a job with a lot more patient responsibility and interaction. i like talking to people and knowing how they feel. that's why i like my job at the hospital so much. i get so much patient interaction. i have learned so much about nursing that i feel ahead of everyone in my class (not to be arrogant or anything). i just feel more exposed to different skills such as catheterizing and starting IV's. a lot of people in my class have never seen these skills performed; i've actually helped with this stuff.

tonight i am trying to cook meatball stew. what a perfect rainy day for a stew. i hope it turns out okay, its my first time. last time i tried a new recipe we ended up going out for pizza. wish me luck....
