Black and White Hungarian movies are classic for me. They usually have young girls, who try to make a living with hard work, until a guy walks into their life. This guy can be pretend rich- or poor, depending on the setting. ^^ Usually in the first case he is a director, doctor, successful lawyer. 300.000 pengő is about a poor working girl, who is liked by the neighbour child. She wants to help her get a husband. While trying to get money for dowry, she goes with the neighbour kids to beg. In the way of helping she meets, and saves a rich bank director, and acts as a contact between the pair to meet.
What I forgot to mention about these films is that they come with songs. Sometimes as part of the story the main actors sing it, sometimes the characters go out for dinner, where the entertainer sings. The songs, mostly the lyrics are great, and so poetic.
When the kids begin to beg, one of them
sings a song. I wanted to let all of you enjoy it so got a rough translation:
Somewhere in the bright Sky
I'm looking for my Star
The good Good I ask
To take my sorrow away
Above on the azure Sky
Let the Sunshine shimmer though
Since I lie waiting for so long
Where my Happiness walks.
My poor Heart is dreary
Waiting for Loyalty, but not finding any.
It made me remember another story, that I re-watched now, What happened in Budapest. This one about a a lawyer, who, to protect his clients secret love affair, pretends to be the husband of the woman. But due to the great act, the client's wife is charmed by the pair, and wants to have dinner by the pair the next day, and meet their not-existing child. The women also seems to cling more and more on the lawyer, who after a time begins to have feelings. His only problem is, that the woman is his client's lover.
