At what point does staying true to yourself push the limit of being worth the risk?

When it would make people see you so differently that you could turn into a victim, is it still worth it?

If you risk losing everything because the wrong people don't understand, is it still worth it?

Whoa, that's deep.

I don't think it's worth it if you're going to lose your sanity. (You know, like that scientist in the Monster Museum. That guy's one stubborn man.)

It's a yes to the last two if it's something I really wanted.

What if you don't know? What if it's something other people may drive you crazy over, but you won't know until you do it?

I'd go for it.

Even if you'd risk being disowned and losing all rights to your inheritance if your parents didn't take it well?

Isn't being true to your heart and feelings what's most important?

That's what I'm asking. Is there a point where the consequences outweigh it?

I followed my feelings, we'll see where it leads us. Won't it?

Its about what I walked in on, isn't it?

Yes. It is.

You should stay true to yourself, Noah! Who gives a damn what anyone else thinks! As long as you have good friends to support you, nothing matters!

Good luck if you don't have friends though, it's a hard road... [hastily scribbled after thinking better of the sentence]

When what other people think can very heavily affect you, you need to think about their opinion. When people have been killed for less, it makes you wonder.

How much can it affect you really? Mentally? Physically?

Truth be told, a lot of people don't like lesbians or gays, and you seem like you've been fine for awhile now. How much more drastic could this be?

Also, do you think your friends will fight for you if it is something people could get killed for? And of course, willing to support whatever you are wanting to do?

Both. I am sure very heavily.

Pretty drastic, really. It is a little hard to understand, which is the part that scares me. People are afraid of what they do not understand, and that makes some of them violent.

My friends, most of them, yes. Some of them I might lose. I am more concerned about my parents, though.

Thinking about it. What we talked about before, I mean.

Oh.

Well, I know this isn't quite the same thing, but you know my entire family's made up of wizards, right? Everyone expected I'd turn out the same way, of course, but I wanted to come out here to be a sage. Parents were a little frustrated about the decision, since it completely broke with tradition, but they were okay with the decision after awhile when they realized it was a new way of looking at magic and stuff.

Like I said, it's not quite the same thing, but...

Hm.

I'm wondering whether my parents would be the same way. Opposed at first, but eventually becoming accustomed to the idea and accepting it.

I don't know, I'm very hesitant about this. I'm afraid I'd be disowned, and I'm afraid of the reactions by my peers. It's true that Schwarzwald is more liberal about these things than Rune-Midgard, but even here transvestitism is almost unheard of on the scale we're talking.

Staying true to your convictions and beliefs is more important than what other people think of you.

If you hide what you really think, then you really have lost everything that is important to you.

But when what other people think of you has the power to affect your life and livelihood, does that still hold true? Should some things not be kept secret for the sake of your own well-being?

You shouldn't let other people hold that power over you. Period. It's demeaning to oneself to allow others to control what you think and say and feel.

What do you mean?

Ah, for instance, I've heard stories of people in Rune-Midgard being attacked or murdered for being homosexual. Something along the lines of that.
