Long Overdue Character Meme

Jun 11, 2011 20:17

So, I requested/was given this meme a couple of months ago. I promptly wrote down a list of my names on my whiteboard, ignored it until after finals, and then forgot it when I left for the summer. Fortunately, I went back a couple of weeks ago, wrote down the list, and then finally got it down to five characters I actually mostly wanted to write about.

1. Comment - intelligently or in a nonsensical fashion, requesting to play. General comments are welcome too!
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Post the names of five fictional characters whose names begin with that letter, and your thoughts on each. The characters can be from books, movies, or TV shows.

In no particular order (and a very strange and scattered mix):

1. Nahuserah from The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner
He's a rather slimy guy who flatters his way around everything, has a harsh interior, and isn't a very good judge of character at all. But he's kind of interesting, and makes a good character to loathe and cheer against. After all, you shouldn't trust a guy who, "sharpens his beard into points like a fork and uses cheap hair oil".

2. Nat Eaton from The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare
Slightly annoying, has a temper, drives the main character insane, but you still can't help but like him. Which, I think, is part of the point, but since he annoyed the character that also annoyed me sometimes, I liked him just because. He's someone who I'm not sure I would actually get along with in real life, but whom I quite like while he's in the parameters of the story and safely fictional.

3. Nimaine from 100 Cupboards by N. D. Wilson
A fairly decent villian, though a bit typical, I suppose. Her entrance into our world and her attempt (much less, at least at the beginning, lofty than Jadis' though far more threatening) to defeat the heroes is rather interesting. Granted, Jadis had the whole of London to run amuck in. Nimaine gets stuck in a farmhouse outside of a tiny town in Kansas---not much to do there. But, if I recall right, she more than makes up for it later...

4. Nina Tucker from FullMetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa
Granted, she's a bit character. But she's cute! And she has an adorable dog who's bigger than her (and almost the same size as the title character...). :D Her story segment is short, but she reminds Ed and Al that it's good to occasionally just take a break and have fun. Also, the ending of her segment also has quite an affect on the brothers and jump-starts a storyline.

5. Nancy Drew from the Nancy Drew series by Caroline Keene
Arguably one of the world's most famous female detectives, and a teen one to boot! I loved reading her books when I was young; she was great fun to read about and you could always be sure of a kidnapping or other such exciting situation coming along. I don't remember ever having any aspirations to be like her, though. Regardless, though, even now I still occasionally like to reread some of her books. I do find the original originals the most fun, though (there's one where she not only borrows her father's revolover, but does it without his permission or knowledge, I believe. Shocking, and yet probably one of the instances where she shows the most common sense as she was heading into a potentially dangerous situation and he was gone).

So, that's it for the meme! Since Nahuserah was the first character I thought of, I'd wanted to kind of do the opposite of Mel, but do you know how hard it is to find five villains with names beginning with N? I got to four and then decided some of them weren't really villainy enough and thus gave up. Ah, well.

*is also very happy to be back on lj again* Yes, it was an insanely busy semester and this summer has been busy as well so far. Hopefully I'll be starting to catch up now---I have quite a few graphics to post. :)
