RECOMMENDATION SUNDAY: Advent Edition

BOOK: If you're looking for a gift for a child this Christmas, you can't do better than The Story of Holly and Ivy by Rumer Godden, the tale of an orphan girl, a doll, and the power of wishing. It's full of Christmas atmosphere and the Barbara Cooney illustrations are magical. My mother read this to me every Christmas growing up, and if I have kids I'll continue the tradition.

MOVIE: The movies I watch to get into the holiday spirit fall in two categories: Movies About Christmas and Movies With Good Christmas Scenes. The Man Who Came To Dinner belongs to the latter category: fun all year round but especially good on a snowy December day. Starring Bette Davis and Monty Woolley, it's one of the greatest classic comedies - the story of an irascible codger who breaks his hip at a family's house and ruins their lives with his whims, schemes, and penguins. At Christmas.

SONG: More presents. To download, click the link and fix the URL. One pop and one classical song this week. Sarah McLachlan's Song For a Winter's Night is exactly what it says, the perfect song for a snow day like I'm having! And I love The Nutcracker. For added fun: this piece, Journey Through The Snow, has one little bit (around 2 minutes in) that sounds like the Stargate theme.
