The current Big Story is about wiretapping with one end of the conversation being in the U.S.A. and whether or not such wiretapping is legal. But the wiretapping itself isn't what I'm on about just now. What I wonder about is the reporting of it, or more specifically the delayed reporting of it.
The New York Times broke the story. Newspapers and other news media like to portray themselves as the guarantors of freedom, the watchful eye keeping tabs on government and industry. Yet the Times claims to have sat on the story for a full year.
That's rather strange, especially if the folks at the Times really do believe, as it seems they do, that the actions were (and are) illegal. Why let it go unreported for a year? Perhaps a few days or even a couple weeks to verify things, but a year?! That delay, at the very least, looks mighty suspicious.
