Look: I emerge from hybernation to do this rec-a-weekend thing again.

Title: love cannot fill the thickened lung with breath, / nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone
Author: inkandcayenne
Fandom: True Detective
Characters/Pairings: Rust Cohle/Laurie Spencer, Maggie Hart
Summary: She does love him; she is sure of it. But she loves him the way she loved Rome when she spent a year there her junior year in college, transfixed by its ancient, terrifying beauty. Even after six months, when the sharp edges of the city’s unfamiliarity grew rounded and soft, she always knew it was not home. He loves her, too, in the bracing, merciless way that the North Atlantic loves the shore, because geography has thrown them together and now they can’t be rid of one another.
Wordcount: 6.300
Why it's awesome: The story takes a character barely touched by canon and fleshes her out, makes her real, while also using her as an outside pov on Rust and all the ways in which he doesn't quite fit this world and its people. It's a somewhat bleak protrayal of a relationship doomed from the start, beautifully written, and the author does a great job with Maggie, too.
