Why it's awesome: This was written before Sam got his soul back on the show so it's AU in that regard. I used to love it when I first found it years ago, because - besides the beautiful and athmospheric writing - it left no doubt about the fact that Sam was in Hell for a very long time and that something like that damages a person, permanently. Nowadays, I think I love it even more, because it gives me the kind of psychological consequences canon is absolutely lacking currently after the writers decided to pretend Hell never happened. Anyway, if you're looking for a very good story with Sam being broken but still awesome and Dean being just awesome, this is for you.
