Eid Mubarak

This week we are working to install clean water systems for a number of Mosques in a town called Katankudi---a community that was affected by many years of civil war until peace treaties were signed five years ago, and THEN had their homes wiped out by the tsunami, and have now joined packed communities further inland, increasing their population density and risk of shallow water table contamination.

The saddest thing is that the wells are all located right next to the mosque toilets and septic systems,
so the water that their children drink is loaded with fecal coliforms and nitrates. Once installed, our
water systems will provide the community with clean water for drinking andwudu.

This is a very rewarding project to be doing for Ramadan, although I am missing my family big-time. What is most strking to me is how caring the Muslims have been here---even though I don't speak their native language and they have almost no money, everyone I have met has welcomed me as a muslim sister--giving me the best of their food, opening their homes and their hearts.

such caring people make my spirit fly.
