so guys, have you heard the news? apparently, in the academic world, outright theft is totally allowable now. think i'm shitting you? because i'm not. so in my poetry class, this 'edgy' girl (the same artsy one from before) turned in some poetry for class discussion today. of her three poems, one stole from a dictionary (whatever), one was actually her own stuff, and one, sly little girl, was completely taken from the new york post. nothing changed. actually, maybe she pressed enter in several 'opportune' spots. but everything else was new york post. the writing, the 'bat-wielding thugs,' everything. and, get this, she was praised for it. everyone in my class was like, oh wow, that was my favorite piece. my professor even said, in response to my comments that it was boring, unoriginal, and thievery, that 'boring' was actually rather interesting, after which he spoke about the wonders of this nifty little technique called 'appropriation.' what the fuck? am i the only person that sees that pressing enter or space bar while the cursor is in a line of someone else's (not particularly well-written, i might add) newspaper prose is not creative, nor interesting, nor anything remotely approaching academic? that's like calling milli vanilli (the on-stage personalities) 'artists.' please, someone, save me from this worthless ass-leakage course.
