looking at simplicity

How much do we take for granted in our everyday lives?  Many of us turn to the more complex to find happiness, whereas others look for the simple happenings and elements of everyday life, in which they find true happiness.  The reason why this question has surfaced in my mind is because of something that I experienced for no more than 30 seconds over this past weekend.

I was staying with my volleyball team in a hotel just outside of Washington DC, since we had a tournament all weekend.  Early Sunday morning I was making my way down to the lobby, and the elevator doors opened in front of me.  Inside the elevator there stood a middle aged lady, and her shopping cart, containing what looked like all of her worldly possessions.  She greeted me with a friendly smile and a simple "good morning".  She was between 50 and 60 years of age, and was wearing a nice Christmas sweater.  She was clean and presented herself in a well mannered way.

She spoke to me again, wondering if I had happened to look out my window yet that morning.  I responded by saying that unfortunately I hadn't had the chance to.  Then, she said something that I'll never forget: "The sun is shining bright, today is going to be a good day".

Many of us couldn't even put all of the insignificant objects of our houses in one shopping cart, and the last thing we're worried about is the weather.  If you think about it, we don't look to the weather to have a good day, just as long as we have a house, a car, and are making mooney or good grades in school.  When the morning comes where I can do the same as she did that morning, my priorities will be right where they need to be.
