I've been in the Army for about a year now, however I've only been with my unit for about 6 months. So far, the experience has not been good. I've said from the beginning that the Army really isn't for me but I was willing to see it through because I did sign a contract but now I wish that I had quit. I can't stand it! Sounds pretty standard for a big ramp-up... things get changed or misunderstood, but we serve in a dynamic environment. Everything is subject to change, accept that, and the military is a much easier place to deal with.

I had to reassure my wife as we were prepping to go back to Iraq in '95 (after Saddam's brother-in-law defected and gave solid evidence of still-active WMD programs) it was a sketchy time, and the march back was still being debated from senate to congress. At the tail end, we were whipping in the breeze, so I made a list of things I knew I could count on - Food, shelter, sleep, healthcare for the dependents and no worries about a lay-off for me.

If you get real uptight about things changing, it gets worse in the civilian sector. They'll outright lie. I got a 6-month contract renewed and was laid off 3 days into it. I had to confront my manager toe-to-toe and get her to admit my badge wasn't going to work the next day.

So don't sweat the small shit... you'll eventually go overseas, you'll get to see stuff no one back home could even imagine, and you'll come back and be annoyed with how much he protesters -don't- know, and how loudly they don't know it.
