Unit Delimma

I've been in the Army for about a year now, however I've only been with my unit for about 6 months. So far, the experience has not been good. I've said from the beginning that the Army really isn't for me but I was willing to see it through because I did sign a contract but now I wish that I had quit. I can't stand it! Everyone says that it's ( Read more... )

They may not have been in charge of the date change. When I deployed (though not with my unit), we were told that we would be leaving on a certain date and we ended up leaving earlier. One of my friends, when they deployed (again, not with the unit), had their deployment canceled DAYS before they were set to leave. They had SRPed, brought their stuff home for storage, and were home on pre-deployment leave when they were told that their deployment was canceled. Then, the ended up deploying a month later anyway.

Also, it is entirely your fault you got an ass chewing because you ASSUMED that your command would know that you couldn't make it to the ceremony. YOU should have talked to them about it and maybe they could have told you to bring your bags after the ceremony or could have excused you from the ceremony. You don't get to excuse yourself on the basis of an assumption. If you feel there is a conflict with the schedule, then you need to bring it to someone's attention (that is in a position of authority).

Wires get crossed, shit happens. I wasn't entirely happy in the Army, either, but I drank water and drove on and made the best of it. I worked with assholes, I worked with completely awesome people. That's life, the only difference between the Army and a civilian job is that you can't quit the Army as easily (but then, it's not as easy for them to shitcan you, either, so it goes both ways).

Trust me, it DOES get better. Or, it will, if you try to make the best of it. I thought the same way you did - wished I could have found a way out in BCT or AIT the first year or so in permanent party status. But as time went on, it got better. There were a lot of people I didn't trust to tell things to because of their shit talking ways, but eventually, I learned who they were and avoided them and I also found people I could trust. Then, I got out.
