Vol. 56 -  Ramen no Arashi
When dinner time arrived, they found themselves in a Chinese restaurant. A heated discussion of flavours and ingredients is ignited…

Following Sakurai-kun’s orders for “a heated talk about Arashi’s beloved ramen!”, Aiba-kun and Matsumoto-kun go to a homely Chinese restaurant. They immediately order shoyu (soy sauce) ramen and miso ramen before going on to watch TV and read manga ♪ They share their ramen and finish it in no time! After their stomachs have been filled, they get caught up in a discussion of their ramen obsessions.

Aiba: This shop’s food was great ♪

Matsumoto: It really was! I’m so full!

Aiba: I couldn’t decide which ramen is my favourite~. Anything from traditional Chinese soba to dandan noodles [T/N: A kind of spicy Sichuan noodles] - I want to eat all different kinds depending on how I'm feeling at the time.

Matsumoto: (Without hesitation) My favourite is Kitakata ramen! The simple flavour and curly noodles are perfect for my taste. Aiba-chan, what’s your most memorable ramen?

Aiba: Well, that would have to be my first ever ramen, from my family’s Chinese restaurant. Though it’s a simple ramen, the taste is nostalgic for me.

Matsumoto: Ah, that’s nice. For me too, it would be the local ramen place I always used to go to. I still yearn for that place, even now. Shoyu, miso, salted butter, tsukemen - I’d eat anything there.

Aiba: Do you remember about ten years ago when the “ramen craze” hit Arashi? We’d always go to that ramen place near the rehearsal room (laugh).

Matsumoto: Some people kept eating ramen every day, some people made the change to fried rice (laugh). But these days I really look forward to trying the local ramen while we’re on tour!

Aiba: The five of us have gone to eat together so many times that we’ve pretty much gotten to know what each member likes. Nino likes miso, right?

Matsumoto: And Leader and Sho-kun like tonkotsu. Sho-kun usually gets toppings too.

Aiba: His order is always “With extra menma!” (laugh) [T/N: menma is fermented bamboo shoots]. I tend to get vegetables like bean sprouts or cabbage on mine. Matsujun likes it simple, don’t you?

Matsumoto: Yeah. I think it’s the best if I can eat the ramen with just the soup and noodles and find it delicious. Really, I don’t even mind if there’s no barbeque pork or anything.

Aiba: The opinion of an expert! Now how about the sides to order with your ramen…

Together: (At the same time) Gyoza, of course! ♪

Aiba: Then sometimes I like to have rice too. First I like to just taste the ramen on its own, then I scoop out the noodles and dip them in the rice then eat it all together like that. Then at the end I drink the soup while finishing off the rice!

Matsumoto: Eeh, really? I have my own specific way of eating too. When I’m making instant ramen at home, I kind of have my own way of doing it. After the noodles have been boiling for about one and a half minutes I crack in an egg and mix it around. I can’t resist the smooth taste when the egg gets all mixed in with the noodles!

Aiba: Ooh~, there really are a lot of techniques (laugh).

Matsumoto: You know, ramen, it’s a food everyone loves. When I’m overseas and see a ramen place it makes me happy and I definitely have to go in (laugh). I also love the energy those places give off.

Aiba: Talking about this makes me want to eat again. In this coming season it’ll be nice to eat some cold noodles.

Matsumoto: I also make chilled Chinese noodles.

Aiba: Next time, let me eat some too!
