Music Rec List - The Summer Seven

Jun 05, 2010 01:05

Got another one for you, tailor-made for the season. These are seven of my favorite songs that I must play with my windows down, full blast, as the summer sun burns up above.

Or, you know, as the pollen fucks with my sinuses. Whatever. These songs make me happy. :D

ps - even if they aren't all about summer. heh.

--You know, how cool is this little diddy? And it is totally the kind of song you can call a 'diddy'. And who is that singing, you might ask? Well, it just happens to be Jason Schwartzman (actor extraordinaire from cool shit like The Darjeeling Limited) - and that lovely lilting gal in the background is none other than Kirsten Dunst. Go figure, right? This is bad-ass.

--WNCW introduced me to this song years ago and it still makes me insanely giddy every time I play it. Bongo drum action to a snappy beat, with simple lyrics about a girl... Yea, this is it. I highly recommend this one.

--Hands down, my favorite surf guitar song and definitely in my top ten of instrumentals ever. Surf and sand... that is summer, people. Plus, I have the added happiness of my memories of staring at the album cover for The Ventures 'Pipeline' as a child and being fascinated by it (because I really wanted to learn how to surf) and then getting even more gleeful when my father could play the famous slide-riff.

--Sometimes, you know, it is just the association of hearing song and how it takes you to a certain time or place... or space, even. The Beach Boys were harmonizing gods and this is their bible. It is such groovy 60's music and tone - and when they hit that high note at 2:55, that is damn good stuff. This song always makes me think of the middle of the year, on the beach, with the whole of the day ahead of you.

--Taking that awesome disco moment from Andrea True Connection's 'More More More' was a stroke of genius, but it all comes together so well and so joyfully and so very 90's... You have to play this loud, you have to sing along and it has to be hot outside. It is a must. Do it now, okay?

--Like a Frankie & Annette film, but much gayer and much better (Beach Blanket Bingo with a twist? Maybe Psycho Beach Party... ;) ). Those guitars alone make me swoon. But then you get hit with the Yoko Ono-inspired backing vocals and you know you are not in Kansas anymore. And you are so glad for that fact.
Plus, any time you get sound effects for various sea-life in a song, you really have to give high marks.

--Okay, I've been rocking this one since it came out in 2000 and with good reason: it is a prime dance/club track, the kind that you have to have busting your speakers as the day finally ends and you are out for the night, warm breezes and friends and dancing.
This song is all about having the best time possible.
