Well... This world is kind of based on those, from what I can tell. In the games, you had to capture these creatures called Pokémon and take on the gym leaders while fighting off a gang called Team Rocket. There's a lot of differences between this place and the games, though.

Yeah. They steal rare Pokémon to sell them, and they exploit all the others. They wanted to take over the world using Pokémon, but you put a stop to them in the video games. I don't even know if they're here.
