Character
Name: Toothless
Series: How to Train Your Dragon (film adaptation)
Timeline: Post-canon
Canon Resource Links: The How to Train Your Dragon Wiki

Affiliation: Toothless will be the most fail trainer to ever train.

Personality: [As a dragon]
Toothless is a dragon. Not just any dragon, but the most terrifying dragon ever seen on the island of Berk. Toothless is a Night Fury. The canon originally tells us it never steals food, never shows itself and never misses. In a place where every kind of dragon imaginable has had its head mounted on a wall, the Night Fury has never been caught or even seen. He comes off as strong, fast and incredibly intelligent. Every Viking fears it, going as far as to write “hide and pray it doesn’t find you” as the only option when facing a Night Fury. He is considered the offspring of Lightning and Death itself. He is complex, an enigma: why would he attack if he doesn’t want to steal food, anyway?!

Toothless has no voice, but that hardly means he has no personality. If anything, Toothless has the biggest personality in the movie. Strong, fast and agile, Toothless is definitely a beast to be feared… but at the same time, he is much like a cat when calmed and feels emotion as strongly as any human shown in the movie. He is entirely capable of quiet fear, but is very much a prideful thing, refusing to panic or beg. Rather, when faced with death, he simply, calmly stares. This calm is an incredible strength. It helps cover his fear, and is probably more useful than any super speed or strength or fire breathing-it allows him to think in battle. He remains steady in the face of anything, always able to formulate the best plan of action, whatever it may be.

Toothless is not easily won over, not at first. A prideful being, he will take a shine to you if you decide to compliment him or feed him. However, if your first appearance is a threat (to him or anyone he cares for) or an insult, prepare to have a dragon ready to breathe fire in your face. Should you dare cross him, or deny him doing things his way, you will have to be prepared for the silent treatment, or a good deal of mischief until you see things his way. Toothless has somewhat of a complex about being in control. It is only when he is the one calling the shots that he can be truly comfortable starting a relationship. If someone tries to boss him around, he quickly gets defensive and can lash out. Once whoever is with him becomes aware that they aren't going to be able to control the situation, the dragon will let down his guard, and become his playful, lovable self.

When fighting, Toothless is absolutely merciless. It’s widely known in Berk that dragons will always go for the kill. However, Toothless can tell the difference between “VIOLENT MURDEROUS VIKING” and “walking, talking fish bone who might have actually saved him”. Which means, outside of battle, he’s a compassionate beast. He won’t kill when it’s not necessary. When you’ve gained Toothless’s friendship, you’ve got a friend for life. Toothless will support you in anything you do, let you know when you’re being stupid and protect you from any danger you might face that isn’t him.

That includes other dragons. Toothless’ motivation, shown late in the movie, to attacking the villagers is to protect the other dragons. From what? From a giant monstrous frigging mondodragon that eats any dragon who doesn’t bring it enough food. Toothless isn’t in it for the food, he’s not in it for the fighting. He’s in this battle simply to protect other dragons. And, eventually, to protect the Vikings of Berk.

There is no good and bad in How to Train Your Dragon. There is simply the curious, the ignorant and the hungry. Toothless and Hiccup meet simply because they’re the only ones of their kinds who are curious enough to see what would happen if a friendship could be maintained between a human and a dragon. It manages to hold itself based on their similarities. Their humors are the same, and they’re both willing to give this a try. Neither is the strongest or the bravest or the best. But by learning about each other, by being open, Toothless and Hiccup start a chain of events that changes Berk forever.

[As a human]

Obviously, there is no canon interpretation of Toothless being human. However, I would like to incorporate all the canon of his being a dragon with the following:

-Toothless will be very quiet, relying much on his body language, expressions and simpler noises to get across what he's trying to say. As time goes on, I do expect him to speak more, but his voice will be developed through learning from other characters in-game.
-Toothless will not be able to type, or write. That just doesn't make sense.
-Toothless, despite being incredibly intelligent, will be a teenager. His general attitude fits more an adolescent than an adult or child.
-Toothless, in correspondence to his injured tail, will be missing his left foot. Upon reaching Cherrygrove, he will be helped out by nurses.

Samples
(Please note that both samples must take place in Route_29’s setting.)

First Person Sample: [The video flicks on of a boy with black hair crouching, staring intently at a Charmander. He tilts his head one way, then the other, making sure to give the little orange lizard a complete look over. Is it a dragon? It sure looks like a dragon, at least to Toothless. He had never seen this particular breed, but it was probably a dragon. Maybe related to a Night Mare... After all his tail is on fire.

And if this was a dragon, it's time for it to learn who's in charge. He sucks in a breath and--]

Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!

[--Gives a pathetic, half-roar. If I scare it, I win--

The Charmander just tilts his head to the side with a Char? Toothless frowns, as this was supposed to be threatening. ... Human lungs. He sucks in another breath and--]

Raaaaaaaagh!

[Because being louder will totally work.

Needless to say, it doesn't. Frowning still, he flops down, crossing his legs and hunching his shoulders, shivering. Then, he shakes his head violently.]

... Cold. [With another head shake he sneezes]

[The Charmander looks at Toothless. And then opens it's mouth, letting out a Chaaaaaaaaaar! as if to mimic Toothless's roar.

Toothless snaps his teeth at it, Silly tiny dragon. Won't scare me, and then jumps, lifting a hand to his face.]

... ow... bit my tongue... worse than a Terror...

Third Person Sample:

Toothless was not used to being this cold. Certainly, it snowed nine months out of the year in Berk, and hailed the other three, but Toothless was normally a dragon. A medium-sized, scaly black dragon who could breathe fire whenever he wanted. So winding up a scrawny, pale boy in fabric the vikings would have shunned for being flimsy was a less than ideal situation.

Even less ideal was how very defenseless the scrawny human body was. The teeth weren't sharp, he couldn't travel very fast, and he was hindered in an even worse way.

He was missing a foot.

Which meant he was hobbling on the end of a leg that hurt very, very badly. Already uncomfortable in the body he was given, he could barely stand. Just getting out of this... "Mom"'s house was a struggle. Now, breathing heavily, he could only sit outside the door, slumped against the wall, nursing his injured limb and try to figure a way out of this mess.

And it was when he had this first chance to think that he realized something was very, very wrong. No, it wasn't that these houses were strange. No, it wasn't that he had no idea how he got here. And, no, it wasn't that he was a human (though these were all very pressing matters, they were things he could deal with, somehow).

Toothless was alone. Hiccup was not there, Astrid was not there, Stoic was not there. There were no other dragons. There was not a single soul who he recognized.

He was, in this very strange world, completely alone.

He was not sure when being alone had come to bother him. He had survived on his own for a very long time. Night Furies were not common, and his pride had always prevented him from really becoming close to other kinds of dragons. When he had come to rely on Hiccup, it must have changed him.

Because now, being alone, being hurt, being in a strange place... scared him. He swallowed a very small whine, and hunched himself into a ball.

What now?
