100 Fanfic Ideas - 04/100

So recently, I acquired the entire Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series on DVD. And of course, while watching the old series again, I found myself wanting to contribute to the fanfic community for them. However, the more I watch MMPR, the more I also started getting into some of the later Power Rangers series, specifically Power Rangers Ninja Storm and Power Rangers Samurai.

And I know people have similar last names frequently, but I found it interesting that Cam from Ninja Storm and Mia from Samurai have the same last names. And, reading too much into it as I do, I can't get the idea out of my head that they're related. It's also too much of a coincidence that Cam was the Samurai Ranger in Ninja Storm, and that his mother was a Samurai before enrolling in the Ninja Academy (okay, so yes it is a coincidence, but again, I read too much into things). So it's in my head-canon now that Cam and Mia are related.

The idea I have is pretty recent, and it hasn't been thought out into too much detail yet. But I wanted to write a story exploring the possibility that Cam and Mia are family. It's most likely bordering AU while trying to stay as in-canon as possible, especially when I borrow elements from the original Samurai Sentai Shinkenger series about some of the Pink Samurai Ranger's backstory.

The story mostly takes place sometime after the Ninja Storm/Dino Thunder team up, when Sensei Watanabe is contacted by his cousin and his wife. Sensei's cousin is asking him to visit, so Sensei decides to take Cam along to meet their family. They head over there, and Cam meets his father's cousin and wife, and their two children, Mia and Terry. Mia's mom, it turns out, is the one who helped Sensei with Cam's samurai training. Meeting her now, however, Cam discovers she's been paralyzed from the waist down due to some accident.

It also turns out that the reason that Sensei's cousin and wife asked him to come was because they needed someone to train Mia in the way of the Samurai. Sensei isn't as familiar with the training of a Samurai, other than what he's already taught Cam, and Cam is asked to teach Mia instead. It's important for her to learn, and Sensei and Cam learn that that's because Mia is next in line to become the Pink Samurai Ranger. Normally, Mia's mother would be the one to train her, having been the previous Pink Samurai. But the last fight with Master Xandred left her paralyzed, and so she asks Cam to teach her instead. Mia's parents also ask that Mia stay with them at the Ninja Academy during her training, and Sensei and Cam reluctantly accept to do so.

So Mia goes to stay with them at the Ninja Academy, meeting Tori, Shane, and Dustin while she's there (and Blake and Hunter sometimes too, depending). Of course, as instructors at the Ninja Academy, no one is able to spend a lot of time with Mia, who is younger than all the students at the academy. She also doesn't take any ninja training, and so doesn't connect with most of the students other than being around them. Notably, Cam also doesn't seem to spend a lot of time with his cousin. When Tori points this out, Cam mentions the responsibilities he has to the academy, and Tori replies that he has responsibilities to his family.

Of course Cam wants to help his little cousin. But it's hard, because he has no idea how to interact with a 10-year-old girl outside of their training. So he reboots Cyber Cam to have him spend time with Mia. Cyber Cam's more fun anyway, so Mia would probably have more fun with him.

And it works; Mia does have a lot of fun playing with Cyber Cam whenever Cam has to do something around the academy. But besides a gentle chewing out from both Tori and his father, Cam also becomes a little jealous that Cyber Cam can connect with Mia in a way that he can't. Because family is important to Cam, and it bothers him that he can't get close to his cousin. He doesn't know how to deal with kids, not having been a regular kid himself growing up, so the idea of trying to spend time with one is slightly intimidating. At the same time, he wants to get to know Mia better, but he doesn't know how.

Eventually, though, Cam and Mia start to bond one day when they start talking about their mothers. Mia finds a picture of Cam's mother and asks about her, and Cam talks about how she had once been a Samurai as well. He doesn't tell her about traveling to the past and meeting her, but he does admit that he doesn't remember much of her since she passed away when he was pretty young. Part of the reason he trained as a Samurai, he tells her, is so he can keep her close to him.

Mia starts talking about her mom too, and how her mom wasn't around as much while being the Pink Samurai Ranger. As a Ranger, her mother had to stay at the Shiba house to protect their families, and so Mia's family didn't see her much until she returned after the last battle with Xandred. The battle left her mom paralyzed, which was hard on the family. Mia mentions how she thinks that her parents sent her away so that it would be a little easier for her mother to recover after the battle, so they don't have to worry as much while dealing with her mother's state. It's something that Cam thought as well, but he's surprised that Mia came to such a conclusion. So he reassures Mia that they didn't send her away for bad reasons, and that they wanted to do what's best for her. That's why they had her stay with him and Sensei, so that she would be around family.

It's the first time the two really connect, but after that their relationship starts to grow stronger. Cam even spends more time with her outside Samurai training doing normal things, like taking her to movies and playing games with her.

I really just wanted to explore the dynamics of how Cam would react to having a little sibling figure around, and him trying to deal with something like that. Plus, I wanted to set this up in hopes of making further family-centric stories using this idea as Mia grows older before becoming the Pink Samurai Ranger (although I did have an idea of a story where Cam went to visit Mia at the Shiba household, just like Terry did in an episode of Super Samurai). All in all, I just wanted to make cute family stories with these two.
