I love painting the weird animal saints. I don't know why.

St. Mellivora and the Miraculous Sausage

(Yes, yes, I know, always with the phallic symbols. I'm comfortable with that.)

I was reading up a little while ago on the topic of Weird Patron Saints and was amused to read that St. Vitas is the patron saint of oversleeping because he's traditionally portrayed with a rooster (he was boiled in oil with one, and so it just ended up being patronage creep from there).

You should post links to them so Ursula can read them, too? They are wonderful!

Nice piece.

He's probably a saint for figuring out how to hide how sausage is made from the public ;P

"Mellivora" is the genus name of the African honey badger, an obscure and vicious mammal

Hey!

I was recently trying to read the book "A Badger at My Window" (which looked heartwarming but started out with the history of badger harassment, and I just couldn't get past that part) which pointed out that badgers had a really undeserved reputation for being mean-spirited creatures, and this might have to do with the fact that humans think it's fun to send terriers down their tunnels. Being awoken by a terrier, and then by men come to dig you out, is likely to put any creature in a bad mood and at risk for leaving a poor impression.

African Honey badgers, (as you know, Bob,) are notable for their interactions with Honey guide birds, who will lead them to bee's nests so the badger and the bird can get fed. One one hand, a badger that is willing to be lead through the scrub by a small bird can't be all bad. On the other hand, a badger that regularly claws its way into live bee colonies probably has a reason or two to be irascible.

The bees probably consider it vicious, though perhaps not particularly obscure.
