Imagine if you will
Imagine a president John McCain sitting at a negotiating table with another world leader, with whom he disagrees strongly. Imagine him rolling his eyes, inhaling loudly, grunting and grimacing like a toddler that needs to go to the bathroom in the midst of heated talks. Imagine him using airquotes to dismiss his opponent's (oh yeah, they were economic partners, but in about five minutes they became opponents) silly concerns about "human rights" or "basic fairness" or whatever thing he thinks is as silly as "the mother's health" when it comes to abortion.
After eight years of a president who can't put a sentence together, laughs inappropriately, and gives unsolicited backrubs to female heads of state (and, oh yeah, starts wars on false pretenses and tries to bully allies into joining in) I didn't think America's standing in the world, as represented by our executive branch, could get any worse. I can't help but think that McCain would alienate our last friends in the world (you know, like Spain) and squander what's left of the goodwill the world community has for us.
The debate made me realize more than ever that we need to elect a diplomat. Someone whom the very act of electing will elevate the country's status in the world. Fortunately, I think we're going to do it, but we actually have to get out there and vote.
I'm talking to you, people in Ohio and Florida!!
