Watched The Cable Guy. It was surprisingly good, although there was a moment of pretentiousness at the end, with people re-discovering books because there was no more TV. Really, I think the goodness of the movie had more to do with Jim Carrey's performance, especially his karaoke version of "Somebody to Love", with exaggerated Grace Slick vibratos.
Edit: you can see
his rendition on YouTube.
As I said before, the only movies I've seen that Judd Apatow's written were Walk Hard and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. I thought the latter was kind of blah, about the same level as a mediocre Adam Sandler movie (like I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.) Walk Hard was better than Virgin, but still had some crappy bits. Now, Apatow has a writing credit for The Cable Guy, too, but he was called in for a re-write; the actual script is more a Ben Stiller thing. The other two movies I've seen also had co-writers, so I'm beginning to think the quality of movies he's involved with depends entirely on other people.
I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
