10 Basic Tips for Successful Stylish Dressing

Nov 16, 2006 23:41

1. Don't let trends dictate your look from head-to-toe. Trends are fun
to follow, but understand that not every trend is for everybody. And
please, please don't incorporate a whole season of trends into one outfit.

2. Go strip down to your birthday suit and take a good look at every
inch of your body in front of a full-length mirror. Understand every curve and love them. If you don't love your body, you will not be able to dress it well.

3. And speaking of loving your body, let's not overdo it, ok? For each
ensemble, pick one body part to flaunt. For example, if you are planning
on showing off your decolletage, nix flaunting those gams to the public
with a micro-mini. Nothing is sexier than the illusion of nakedness; not...uh, actual nakedness.

4. Buying cheap clothing is a false economy! Sure, the onset of Always
21 (yeah, I know that's not the actual name, but I'm not trying to get sued...lol)  seemed like a God-send to the fashion-forward hottie on a budget, but buying from there will actually cost you more than buying from say Bloomingchip n' dale's (again, I'm not trying to get sued). How? Well, when was the last time you bought a top from Always 21 that lasted more than 2 washes even in the gentle cycle? I thought so. Still not convinced? Well, look at this:

Top from Always 21=$12.90         number of wears=1
Price per wear=$12.90

Top from Bloomchip n' dale's=$80.00           number of wears=10
Price per wear=$8.00

See? Having a closet of only 10 great, durable, interchangeable pieces is far greater than a closet filled with garments that have loose threads and that match nothing in your closet.

5. Sienna Miller is not the end-all be-all in fashion. Puh-leeeese!

6. Don't be afraid to let your personality dictate your clothing style.
Don't dress like someone you're not and don't feel comfortable
being. If you constantly find yourself wanting to club men over their heads for gawking at you in your plunging V neckline dress, then the alluring/sexy style of dress may not be for you. And guys, if you find yourself  tripping over your baggy jeans and Timberland boots, well then the sporty/urban look is not for you.

7. Don't over accessorize. You'll know if you have on too much if the
scale shows 10lbs greater than your normal weight after you get dressed.
No seriously, pick one or two accents and stick with them. It's ok, you'll find another event to wear your aviator glasses, obi belt, wooden necklace, big hoop earrings, cowboy hat, and bamboo bracelets. There's no need to
wear them all at once!

8. Just because it comes in your size, does not mean it's for you! That goes for both the skinny and the plus-size.

9. Unless you're Renee Zellweger and another Bridget Jones movie is coming out, don't buy something that is too small for you in the hopes of you whittling down 4 sizes to fit into it. Even if it's on sale. Be honest with yourself and your actual size.

10. Befriend a really good tailor. Those Seven jeans that you've been eyeing that would be perfect if they weren't so damned long, can be yours if the tailor is right!
