And! Your comment in the intro- about how you wish Elena had been around when you were a teen? I have the same feels re: Lisa Simpson/childhood... I never considered what Elena would have been for me as a teen, since I was never a big tv person and started reading above my age group at around 12... I'm finding the "YA" culture and characters like Elena so much more appealing now than then.
Really enjoyed this. I think you're so right about the fact that a large portion of fandom expects Elena to be "good and pure" and "The Hero". It's nice sometimes just to be reminded of the fact that you don't need to be a hero in order to be interesting. You don't need to be a hero to have shit go wrong in your life and to have to try to deal with it in the best way that you can. I really enjoy Elena's character as she is but I think that we're often told by other characters that she is self-sacrificing and a bit of a martyr. The thing that annoys me is that she's actually so much more complex than that, and I wish that the writers would just let her be who she is instead of trying to get other people to tell me things that I don't necessarily read into the character myself. Sure, she would die for some people, but not for others. That's what being human is - distinguishing between people you'd die for, and people you just like a lot. Let Elena be human (or kinda not), but enjoy her for who she is, not who you want her to be. And by
