Elena Gilbert Appreciation Week: Post 1

I wrote this post a good while before s3 finale, so if it seems like I'm omitting some facts, that would be because they didn't exist yet :).

1. This is a story about a girl who isn't perfect.

Really enjoyed this. I think you're so right about the fact that a large portion of fandom expects Elena to be "good and pure" and "The Hero". It's nice sometimes just to be reminded of the fact that you don't need to be a hero in order to be interesting. You don't need to be a hero to have shit go wrong in your life and to have to try to deal with it in the best way that you can. I really enjoy Elena's character as she is but I think that we're often told by other characters that she is self-sacrificing and a bit of a martyr. The thing that annoys me is that she's actually so much more complex than that, and I wish that the writers would just let her be who she is instead of trying to get other people to tell me things that I don't necessarily read into the character myself. Sure, she would die for some people, but not for others. That's what being human is - distinguishing between people you'd die for, and people you just like a lot. Let Elena be human (or kinda not), but enjoy her for who she is, not who you want her to be. And by 'you' I mean others, obviously. You already know!
