Las Vegas, NV - Over the course of this convention I've learned some things...
- High order modulation may require a larger dish in order to work reliably.
- There are lots of people going out of their way to put me out of a job.
- The list of things I no longer know about television is quite a bit longer then I thought it was.
- Prices on some things are going down (encoders, modulators, signal processing, cameras and most other mostly electronic goodies).
- Prices on other things have gone through the roof (lenses, flight cases, lighting, light stands, microphones and other mostly hardware things).
- I'm too old to be walking for hours on end though huge convention centers.
- My daughter, laken_steeljaw, is a remarkably gifted craps player.
- laken_steeljaw also is a natural jib camera and Steadicam rig operator.
- The girls at Coyote Ugly will flip off a camera pointed at them.
Have you ever noticed those really cool over the shoulder of the kicker shots on football games? Maybe a slightly overhead shot from center court on an NBA game? This is the gadget that does that trick. It It is called a Cablecam. In my view of the world, it has to be one of the most impressive displays of mechanical engineering to enter the television field in the last 10 years.
Mmmmm.... Donuts!
It's Mr. Microphone! It was cool watching this telescoping boom mic fly around the area surprising people that happen to look up.
Using one, two, three or four large format displays can replace the old monitor wall that used to make up one end of most TV studio control rooms. This is going to make some significant changes in the way things go forward from here.
Las Vegas has a remarkably efficient monorail system that runs along the south end of the strip.
And then there was Coyote Ugly... I don't think that means what I used to think it meant.
I like conventions. I like meeting and greeting. I'm perched on that edge where I'm getting more attention than I quite know what to do with, though.
