Chapter 5

"So his ex, Lantana, confirmed that he spent the night. He called her Heidi by mistake, and she couched him." Bobby said as he approached their desks, focused on Alex as he spoke.

"He's on a roll." She responded, thinking to herself that she wouldn't be so easy to forgive and forget. She pointed at her computer screen getting Bobby’s attention.

"You got something?" He moved close, bending down. The scent of her body wash distracted him. He had to make himself focus on the screen.

"Heidi's mom said Heidi was selling Enrique's stuff online. Take a look." She leaned to the side so that he could read the screen. She waited for him to read the ad and continued, "It's pretty easy for someone to email a high bid and arrange a pick up."

His palms were planted on the edge of her desk. He looked away for a moment to gather his thoughts, then turning back at her he said, "So the guy she buzzed in wasn't coming for the cds. He was hunting."

Before Alex could speak, her phone trilled to alert her of a text. She flipped open her phone relaying the message, "Morgue." She moved out of the bullpen toward the elevators with him following her. She glanced over at him, "Do you have any plans tonight?"

He shook his head. "We could do dinner at a movie at my place?" He suggested low enough for only her to hear.

She nodded, "Sounds good. You make the food, and I'll grab the movie." They stepped into the elevator.

Rodgers approached the pair of detectives. "Sorry, we're backed up. July in New York, the killing gets easy."

"These stab wounds?" Bobby asked, unable to keep himself from touching the body. He turned to her, waiting for an answer.

"My guess old sewing box pinking shears sharpened at the point." Rodgers fists were on her hips as she answered him. "There's progression from nicks to full-fledged wounds."

"So his rage built up as he went along," he touched Heidi's shoulder as he spoke.

Alex looked up at Rodgers and commented, "We noticed a scent…a lotion."

Rodgers nodded, lifting the sheet covering the lower half of the body. "Pierre la Ritz, also old school. Found traces in her labia. She was allergic to it."

The wheels turned in Alex's head. "Any semen?"

"No, but signs of penetration with a foreign object." Rodgers met Alex's eyes, trying not to let Bobby's poking and prodding get to her. She nodded and stepped away from the table.

Bobby, watching her go, let all her information sink in before returning his attention back to the body, the rash drawing his attention more and more.

"She wouldn't own a lotion she was allergic to. The killer brought it." Alex watched him.

"Part of his toolkit." He said as he covered the body again. "The scent was part of his ritualized sadism."

Alex noted a tone in Bobby’s voice that she questioned, "You recognize this."

He gestured with his hands. "Not the scent, but the shears and the binding. It reminds me of a case study from, I don't know..." He thought a minute, "...fifteen years ago."

Alex was intrigued and ventured, "A copycat?"

"Or the killer picking up where he left off." His eyes never left the body. "Either way, it's not his last." He looked up at Alex, almost helpless.

Alex looked up from her book and said softly, “I’m glad we made that rule about leaving work at work. Well, at least for one hour of the night.” They sat at opposite ends of the couch, her feet in his lap.

"Me too." He smiled as he moved his hands from massaging her feet to further up her leg. As much as he tried concentrating on Alex, his mind wandered back of the details of the case from years ago. He was about to speak when the phone rang. Please let it be anything but work.

Reading the display of his cell phone, he sighed. "It's my mom..." When Alex nodded, he clicked the talk button. "Hi Mom..."

"Bobby, they won't let me sleep. They keep poking and prodding me." Francis Goren practically yelled into the phone. She smacked a nurse's hand. "Leave me alone!"

Bobby closed his eyes and stood. She was clearly agitated. He swallowed hard. "You need to let them help you."

Her voice turned hard and cold, "They are trying to kill me, but then you'd love that, wouldn't you?"

Bobby's voice was soft and steady, "You know that isn't true. You know I love you. I just want them to help you feel better."

Frances snorted, "I won't ever feel better."

Bobby looked at Alex, feeling a very familiar helplessness. "I...I can come up there." Alex nodded slowly. She reached for his hand squeezing it gently. He continued, "I...can leave right now."

Frances relaxed a little, but she was suspicious. "You...are coming right now?"

"Yes, I'll be there as soon as I can. I love you."

Frances smirked, "I love you too. I don't hear you moving." She hung up the phone before Bobby could respond.

Alex frowned when Bobby pulled away from her. "Is she going to be okay?"

Bobby sighed softly as he moved down the hall, not answering her question. When he returned a few minutes later, he moved to the door. "I'll be late."

Alex stood to follow him to the door. "Bobby..."

He finally turned to look at her. He searched her eyes, "I...I'm sorry. She just..." He shrugged helpless. "I..."

Alex moved to him, wrapping her arms around him and whispered, "I understand, Bobby." She looked up at him. "I just want you to promise me that you'll call me when you get there." It always worried her when he had to make that drive to Carmel Ridge late at night.

Bobby lowered his mouth to hers. "I promise." He gave her a hesitant smile and stroked her cheek. "I love you."

She rested her head on his chest for a moment. "I love you too." She sighed softly. "Just be careful. Please?"

He kissed her again. "I'll be back soon as I can." He gave her a small smile. "Try to get some sleep."

Alex followed him to the door, her hand snug in his. "I will." With a final kiss, she watched as he moved out the door and down the steps. She sighed softly, locking the door behind him and returning to the couch and her book.

The helicopter blades whirred and thundered overhead. She saw him approaching and called out, "Same saw tooth pattern on the clothes. A lot more stab wounds."

Bobby met her eyes for a moment as they approached the body. "The first girl Heidi, he killed her in her apartment. He left her there. He was being cautious. This woman, he kills her and he takes her with him, dumps her outside." Alex bent slightly to observe. "I guess he's getting confident. You know? Coming into his own."

They both straighten as they observed the body.
