He shifted his weight. He laid there slightly on his side, but his face was burried in the cream colored carpet. She sat on her knees, staring at his back. Silence passed in little eternities. After awhile, she became aware of the the slightest noises. The tocking of the clock. The subtle shifting of life in the night. The human rise and fall. It grew louder until she could no longer take it.
"So. Now what?"
Time undulated forward as she studied his cotton back. Was he asleep? Was he crying? She begun to wonder how long they had been sitting here like this. Minutes? Hours? When breaking up, seconds are lifetimes. Breath is held as if that could stop time and stop it from happening.
She felt her legs grow numb. They had been tucked under her as she sat motionless, paralyzed by reality. Rising, she interrupted silence once more.
"Well, I guess that's it. Goodbye." She tried to say it without wavering. She hoped it sounded firm.
Turning as she stood, she waited. She didn't know what for. Hope? An utterance? Even a slight stir would have made her turn around and hold him close to her. Kiss him. Cry to him.
Nothing. Not even a small goodbye. Not even a breath.
Softly closing the door behind her, she walked steadily out into the still of the night. The air still smelled like summer and the moon was out, making her cheeks gleam in shiny sorrow. Suddenly life was scary and uncertain.

This is just babble. Don't mind me. I'm at work and felt like capturing a moment that will forever stay with me. I wanted to capture the stillness. Because the moment we parted was so still and quiet. It's funny how such a eruptive moment can happen so quietly.
