hoo boy, Lynn

So, instead of ending For Better or For Worse, which was really long past its heyday, Lynn Johnston started doing new strips in the style of the earliest FBoFW following Elly's adventures raising Michael and an infant Elizabeth. Okay. Could be good, I guess ( Read more... )

I thought these were (supposed to be?) the original strips, just rerunning from the more-or-less beginning? I've still been reading it (you don't expect me to delete a bookmark from my morning routine, do you?) but it does turn my stomach in a very different way from the Liz&Anthony glurge toward the end of the original run.

It's new strips, retro-style. Also, she's not drawing them, because she's got some sort of muscle problem, but she is writing them.

Do you perhaps follow the comic strip megathread on SA? They've pretty much abandoned FBoFW, but I've read many a depressing interview with Johnston linked from there.

Oh, also I thought it was HER assistant her husband left her for, but I can't really find anything online that says either way.

I haven't read that thread in the longest time, but I think I know the interview you're talking about.

Internet Rumor has it that it was Lynn's assistant who he ran off with, but also that her assistant was a dental hygienist who went to school with John Rod; in any case, the "John hired a hot dental hygienist" storyline is kind of uncomfortable.

Is it terrible that the second strip is from my life? We probably have a better sense of humor about it...

Also, this reminds me of a joke my mom told me once:

A husband and wife were seeking a divorce and had gone to the town clerk or whatever to file the papers. The town clerk was about to sign, but hesitated, and said, "I'm sorry, I know this is none of my business, but you've been married nearly seventy years! You're both in your nineties... Why are you doing this now?"
"Well," shrugged the woman, "we were waiting for the children to die."

I was horrified. She insisted this was one of the funniest jokes she'd ever heard and that one day I would understand.

I effin hope not.

Somebody who can draw should illustrate this as a comic strip with elderly John and Elly.

I believe the impetus for continuing the strip was that he also took off with all the money, thus preventing her retirement. That's not really the kind of situation that leads to A-level material.

Yeesh.

I certainly don't blame her for being bitter and angry, it's just really uncomfortable to see it in this form. Actually, if she did an illustrated memoir, that would be really interesting and probably therapeutic for her. I'd definitely buy it.
